Sutherland Welles Ltd. Clarabelle’s Wood Preservative

Clarabelle’s Wood Preservative is a clear, flexible, exterior oil finish that preserves wood’s natural beauty and extends its life.

Made from polymerized, 100% sustainably grown tung oil with low VOC & citrus-based solvents, UV guards, and mildewcides, Clarabelle’s blend penetrates and protects wood from the elements. Our Clarabelle’s Wood Preservative can be used as a deep penetrating oil maintenance coat or as a low luster build finish.

Product Description

Clarabelle’s Wood Preservative is made from the highest percentage of tung oil found on the market. Our proprietary polymerization method creates a protective tung oil finish, unlike other penetrating oils

  • Crosslinks with atmospheric oxygen to make a hard, water-resistant film
  • Doesn’t yellow or go rancid over time like many oil finishes do
  • Acid and alcohol resistant
  • Elastic in nature and moves with the wood as it expands and contracts with temperature variations
  • Easy recoating. Just clean, scuff and finish
  • Finish degrades over time rather than peeling and clouding
  • Safe for people, pets, and the environment

Wood Preparation

All wood surfaces should be free of mildew, lichen, lint, dirt, grease, wax, oil and loose old paint. Clean and scrub old wood with TSP and bleach and rinse with water. If sanding (although not necessary), use 220 grit paper, avoiding using higher grits as they close down the wood pores interfering with maximum penetration.

Application as a Preservative

  • Use a Natural white china bristle brush, wiping with Scott blue towel or lint free rag.
  • 1st Coat
    • Apply liberally, applying as much product needed to soak in and leave a little on the top.
    • Let sit for 20-30 minutes, then wipe off.
    • Let dry for 12-24 hours
    • Cure test: Wipe fingertips over the wood. If they glide easily over the surface without picking up oil, you are ready to apply your next coat.

    • Apply second coat same as first, applying as much product needed to soak in and leave a little on the top.
    • Let sit for 20-30 minutes, then wipe off.
