Le Tonkinois Vernis Oil Varnish

High-gloss varnish that provides a durable surface

Le Tonkinois Vernis is a traditional French oil varnish that provides an outstanding and lasting protection on wood and metal. The varnish follows the movements of the wood during changes in temperature and humidity, as well as under heavy load. Provides superb protection against hard wear on e.g. floors.

Le Tonkinois is a natural oil varnish that is based on linseed oil and tung oil. It's environment friendly, it dries quickly and can be recoated after 24 hours.

Because of the absence of volatile solvents, it builds up quickly such that four layers suffice to give a coat of approximately 200 microns. A layer this thick is ample protection against water penetration. Blisters do not form and the layer is sufficiently hard to withstand abrasive action and modest mechanical impact, yet is elastic enough not to crack.

Le Tonkinois is equally at home inside and outside. It withstands walking and persistent humid conditions and is ultraviolet light resistant. These characteristics make the product ideal for a maritime environment . It withstands abrasion , seawater and weather. Thus, this varnish oil is also very suitable for wooden floors , staircases and other 'land-based' uses.

Directions for use:

It is not necessary to stir or to thin Le Tonkinois before use. For best results, apply a number of coats sparingly, with a brush, allowing each to dry for around 24 hours. Expect 20 m² on bare wood and 30 m² for subsequent applications. Penetration into bare timber will depend on the porosity of the wood (oil content etc ). It is recommended to sand lightly after the first coat. Light wet or dry sanding between coats hereafter will achieve a higher gloss finish, though technically it is not necessary. Avoid applying Le Tonkinois in direct sunshine, excessively high temperatures, and in windy or dusty conditions.

Le Tonkinois is not sensitive to atmospheric humidity during applications. Satisfactory results can be achieved even at lower temperatures though naturally Le Tonkinois will flow less well.

After use, a small layer of white spirit over the remaining varnish in the can will extend shelf-life and prevent a skin forming. Alternatively, store the can upside-down. Clean brushes with white spirit, wash with mild soap and rinse carefully in clean water, storing to dry for next use.
