CompositionHISTOCAL® Historic Masonry and Grouting Mortar MG II (fine) consists of natural hydraulic lime NHL 5 acc. to EN 459-1 and grainclassified crushed lime sands.

For laying bricks and grouting of historic masonry (e.g. natural stones, bricks). We recommend our HISTOCAL® Historic Masonry- and Grouting Mortar MG IIa in case of buildings subjected to humidity.
SubstrateThe substrate must be dry, clean and free from loosely attached particles. Sufficiently wet absorbing masonry before.
ProcessingTo be processed with all commonly used mortar mixers (continuous mixer, gravity mixer, blunger) and by hand. Watch for uniform and correct consistency (well earth-moist to plastic).
After-treatmentProtect fresh mortar until sufficient hardening (usually several weeks) against premature drying-out through sun radiation and draft (e.g. hinge with jute sheets kept moist or spray with mist nozzles). The mortar must be protected against frost for several weeks until sufficient hardening has been achieved!
Special notesThe air and surface temperature must be at least 5 ° C and maximum 25 ° C. HISTOCAL® Historic Masonry and Grouting Mortar MG II (fine) shall only be used in the original state without additives.
StorageDry, if possible on wooden shelves and protected against draft.

I have a bag of this already, previously ordered. Can I mix any dye in with it? And also, when it finally sets up, should I be able to scratch it with my fingernail?
Iron oxide pigments can be added up to 5%. We recommend using solomon colors which is designed for adding to mortar mixes.
No, once the mortar is fully hardened you should not be able to scratch it with your fingernail. In rare situations where a soft mortar is needed we would recommend using the NHL 2.0 or the Lime Putty as the binder then adding your own sand. -
How does one chose the type of mortar for a headstone fitting into a slotted base?
Typically for reseting a headstone into a slotted, or keyway, base we recommend using moderate strength fine. High strength fine will also work.

What do you suggest for a keyway with greater than 1/4 inch space between the keyway and the table stone. Tablet is marble and the keyway is granite.
You can use the historic pointing mortar - moderate strength fine - and build up the areas around the stone!
